John, When they talk about threats to Sun, they talk about Linux and Windows 2000; not a mention of Intel or Itanium. Not addressed at me, but, when did that ever stop me. They are obviously looking at it from a software point of view, particularly operating systems. I have noticed that Sun, even though their revenues are overwhelmingly hardware, is quite often talked about in terms of being a competitor with Microsoft. Strange, because none of the other companies into big servers, like IBM or HP are ever called competitors of Microsoft. Maybe it's because McNeally has a fixation on Microsoft, like Ellison of Oracle. They seem to be implying that other systems are less than compatable. Do you feel that this is an accurate representation of Sun's appeal to the end user? Sun may be patting themselves on the back (deserved) after the fact of Solaris becoming THE choice. They used to also ship a lot of "straight" Unix also, but Solaris took over in acceptance. Now they talk as though they planned it all the time. I don't know. I've been personally wondering how long the Sun "in the Sun" would last. Both McNeally and Zander are talking like it only gets better. Might be. Tony
