Four New Patents Issued In UDC'S Organic Light Emitter Project
the Patents Cover Fabrication Methods Using Ink Jet Printing, Photolithography, and Increased Efficiency of OLED Devices
EWING, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2000-- Universal Display Corporation (UDC) (NASDAQ: PANL; PHLX: PNL), a developer of flat panel display technology, announced today that it's research partners, Princeton University and the University of Southern California, received four new patents for the Organic Light Emitter Project, bringing the total number of US patents issued in the project to 22.
UDC has the exclusive worldwide license to all patents issued in the Project.
``These patents cover methods of fabricating OLED devices using ink jet printing and photolithography, as well as methods to increase the efficiency of OLED devices. Said Steven V. The 22 patents issued and more than 45 patents pending in the United States, and additional patents pending worldwide, give us a very strong innovative position in the emerging OLED marketplace.'
The four new patents are: ``Organic light emitting device containing a hole injection enhancement layer', issued to Forrest, et. al., US Pat. No. 5,998,803; ``Method and Apparatus for measuring film spectral properties', issued to Forrest, et. al., US Pat. No. 6,005,252; ``Multicolor display devices', issued to Thompson, et. al., US Pat. No.6,013,982; and ``Method of fabricating and patterning OLEDs', issued to Burrows, et. al, US Pat. No. 6,013,538.
OLEDs are seen as a future replacement technology for Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) and Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs), due to their bright, beautiful colors, wide viewing angle, compatibility with full motion video, broad temperature ranges, thin and conformable form factor, low power requirements and the potential for low cost manufacturing processes. CRT's and LCD's currently dominate the growing $40 billion annual electronic display market.
The Company believes that OLEDs are also a future enabling technology opening up significant new markets for flat panel displays based on novel display features that include transparency and flexibility and in meeting the demand for new portable electronic flat panel display products being driven by the Internet.
UDC has been developing Organic Light Emitting Device (OLED) technology with Princeton University and the University of Southern California (USC) since 1994. The partnership is committed to the innovative research and commercialization of this proprietary OLED technology for applications such as flat panel displays, lasers, and light generating devices.
The Company's OLED technology centers around four important technology platforms: TOLED's (Transparent Organic Light Emitting Devices), which can be up to 85% transparent when not energized, can be used to create vision area displays on windshields, cockpits, helmets and eyeglasses, and can also be integrated with standard silicon semiconductors.
FOLED's (Flexible Organic Light Emitting Devices) can be built on flexible plastic and unbreakable and/or conformable surfaces and provide lighter weight and more durable performance. SOLED's, the third technology platform, are being developed for high-resolution displays.
UDC and it's research partners are also working on a fourth technology platform focusing on a family of high efficiency organic materials using electrophosphorence as the light emitting mechanism
UDC recently moved into a new 11,000 sq. ft facility which will include a pilot line as well as technology development and technology transfer facilities. Located only 20 minutes from the Company's research partners at Princeton University, this new facility significantly increases its resources to accelerate technology commercialization.
With over 2500 square feet of clean room space, this state-of-the-art facility is ideal to further technology development, transfer our technology to manufacturing partners and to work with customers to develop products to meet their future needs for electronic flat panel displays.
