actually I don't think it's risky at all, just a little commission/spread intensive to put the hedge on and off.

I've been waiting for dave_s to chime in here, because he related a strategy of shorting the underlying to match the delta of the put... great idea.

I have 2 problems w/ short straddles... one is that I'm almost surely going to have to repair one side and I don't like to do that... two, I have a hard enough time determining UP or DOWN direction, much less deciding if something will stay in a range.

I used to play a modified butterfly strategy for range bound underlying, but it took too much brainpower to keep track of all the legs.
