I was surprised I could still see it when it was totally 'gone'

If the Earth had no atmosphere, you wouldn't be able to see it. The Earth's atmosphere bends (refracts) the Sun's light into the Earth's shadow. The Moon is at the right distance to intercept only the red rays ... hence the copper color.

Now imagine what the sight looks on the Moon. A pure black sky with a huge (4x the size of a full Moon) blood red circle brightly glowing in the sky.
