Charles - As I recall, the biggest software company in the world is IBM. MSFT surpassed IBM in software revenue about a year ago... they are the biggest. I don't know about efficiency, many smaller companies are very efficient in terms of revenue (or profit) per employee, something about focus and dedication... One metric which had almost disappeared from the business, but is beginning to get back into play, is which is the most FUN to work at... MSFT clearly not in the running for that trophy.
