Thanks Bullrider for the post. One reason I think SANs (with network attached storage mixed in) will have an advantage over straight network attached storage, is the trend of the network is to get your computing power off of the network. Clustering in SANs will create a very powerful "lightning fast" computing platform. I see network attached storage as more passive repositories of information dispersed about the network.
