What Are Driving the Demand for More Chips?

1. Access to the Internet -- everybody is talking about it
2. Cell phone -- everybody is seeing and hearing it
3. Palm computer and other PDA gadgets -- most people are seeing it
4. Broadband communications (cable modem and DSL etc) -- most people have heard the talks
5. DVD, Bluetooth CD-RW etc -- most people see these
6. Wireless for data -- many people do not see this, but will be very big in two years
7. Still growing need for first PC, second/third PC at home -- most people do not realize it. The price for PC are firming and going up (surprise?). I have been in the market for a new 500hz Pentium III eMachine in vein for quite a few weeks. It is just out of stock. The demand for PC is phenomenal and most people do not realize it unless you're on the market for it.
8. Videoconferencing -- most people have forgot it, but it is gathering momentum because of the wider availability for the broadband access to the Internet
9. High Definition TV (HDTV) -- most people forgot it, but will gain momentum with a year

...

That's how Amkor and other chip vendors get their hands full, and will keep that way for a long time to come.
