Was the company Columbia Laboratories (American Stock Exchange "COB")? I just received their investor package (305-860-1670). I would recommend you call them. It was impressive. COB has a patented vaginal delivery system called the Bioadhesive Delivery System. Through this system, active ingredients are transported directly from the vagina to the uterus. Nonoxynol-9, the most widely used spermicide available without a prescription, is utilized in Columbia's patented system as the active ingredient in Advantage 24. The delivery system allows Advantage 24 to adhere to the cervix and slowly release nonoxynol-9 for an extended period. Therefore, Advantage 24 can be applied as much as 24 hours before intercourse. Under the supervision of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Advantage 24 has been tested for safety in more than 600 women in Europe and Thailand. These studies showed that Advantage 24, unlike many other anti-STD formulations tested by UNAIDS, was safe even when administered four times a day. Because of these factors, Advantage 24 is the only product that UNAIDS selected for testing for the prevention of the heterosexual transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV in approximately 2,000 women(in Africa and Asian countries). Advantage 24 is currently available in over 40,000 drug stores and mass merchanisers in the US through a strategic alliance with Lake Pharmaceutical. COL has another prescription product called Crinone. This seems to be their main product. It is a vaginally delivered natural progesterone for use in hormone replacement therapy. They also have Replens a vaginal moisturizer. Completion of UNAIDS STD clinical studies for Advantage 24 is in the first half of 1998. For now Advantage 24 is sold as a spermicide. Endorsement of Advantage 24 by UNAIDS for prevention of STD could have enormous revenue impact that would overshadow its use as a spermicide contraceptive. I still like Procept. I think nonoxnoyl-9 is not effective. Other studies are showing that! Hopefully Procept can sign a partnership with a company that has a proven delivery system like COB.
