Boston's high-tech billionaire David Wetherell is chopping cyberspace into two pieces - his and theirs.

Wetherell yesterday said he's combined several of his 60 online companies into Engage Technologies - creating a single big ad company that will try to wrest control of online advertising away from Silicon Alley's giant DoubleClick.com.

DoubleClick is the only major company delivering advertising and sales pitches to the Web - holding a virtual monopoly over dozens of tiny competitors.

But Wetherell - who wants to become the Warren Buffett of the Internet - has upset the market overnight just by merging some of his key Web operations to create a strong Doubleclick rival.

"DoublClick's an 800-pound gorilla that's going to be hard to take down, but Wetherell has created the first viable competition that would be able to do it," said Steve Vonder Haar, a senior editor who covers online advertising at Interactive Week....
