There is no comparison between IBM in the 80s and Microsoft now, especially in their management. IBM was known as a constipated elephant back then, couldn't get out of their own way, and was arrogant to the point of not caring what their customers wanted. They had an extreme NIH (not invented here) attitude, and wouldn't sell anything to anyone who might possibly be a competitor. They had to clean house in management to turn around.

Microsoft, OTOH, on which I am personally pretty close to ambivalent, exhibits none of these traits. They are hungry, and they keep their ear to the wall to not let anything get by. They'll sell anything to anybody. The one complaint is long, or underplanned development cycles, but I think that's a top priority to fix.

The one big thing in common is government intervention.

I couldn't disagree more with your IBM - Microsoft comparison.
