The analyst also said that this would be a 100 billion dollar market.

And analysts are never wrong.

The technology is intriguing, but too expensive at this point for mass acceptance. Production costs will be high, profit margins low, and there may not be enough platinum in the world to reach the goals many investors see for this and the multitude of other fuel cell companies.

There will be niche markets that will adopt fuel cells in the next couple of years, but as for mass production for autos or homes, we are at least another 10-20 years out. I don't know what Plug Power's production goals are (do they have a plant as Ballard Power is proposing), but Ballard is planning on 300,000 per year, no sooner than 2004 at a single plant cost of $350 million. Plug Power has a product that will be available in 2001, but how many units can they produce? at what price? and at what profit margin?

And as for keeping it in your basement, be sure your basement is well-ventilated because Plug's fuel cell emits carbon monoxide at 50 ppm. May not kill you, but could be a cause of a lot of headaches.
