Games To Lead Way To Broadband, Report
Says

January 20, 2000 -- Video game consoles may well lead consumers toward
widespread acceptance of broadband services, according to a new study.

The report from DFC Intelligence examines next-generation game consoles and
finds them to be sophisticated Net devices. Sony's PlayStation 2 is forecasted
to be the market leader.

"The PlayStation 2 (PS2) is an ambitious system that will have the capability to
play DVD movies, access the Internet and act as a complete 'Entertainment
Box,' what we call an eBox," said Ben Sawyer, one of the principal authors of
the report.

However, Sawyer added, "Whether people use the PS2 to watch movies or
access the Internet remains to be seen." said Sawyer.

The study found that one impediment to game consoles driving broadband
acceptance is that large players in the broadband and Internet space don't
provide much support.

"America Online and Time Warner are merging to become a complete
interactive services provider," David Cole, president of DFC Intelligence, said.
"Despite this, the one thing missing from this merger is games."

Nonetheless, Cole claims that games are likely to become a major reason that
consumers subscribe to broadband services.
