If the acquirer was a non-Gorilla, like Lucent, I would sell the stock and reinvest in another Gorilla.

Of course! But that's why it's not ideal. We can't control who might buy the companies we invest in, so this is at best an academic discussion I'm fostering. Regardless, I'm suggesting that in an ideal world we would prefer not being compelled to sell a stock, especially in taxable accounts when short-term capital gains would be the consequence.

I fell asleep when I laid down by the fire. When I woke up in the middle of the night, I saw the dim light of the computer monitor coming through the door of my office. I succumbed to my addiction to the quality of the thread. In other words, it's YOUR fault. :)
