With GSM being by far the largest wireless protocol and GPRS being the only incremental data upgrade being proposed, it is a sure thing that Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens, and Nortel will support it. The infrastructure manufacturers have a vested interest in upgrades and more upgrades. Support an interim upgrade and you can get another huge chunk of business when GPRS runs out of gas. The carriers are the ones who have to pay the bills. They are being very cautious and examining all their options. The IS95B version four rollout in Japan gives a 64Kb always on IP packet network internet access. It is not Qualcomm HDR. HDR requires dedicated spectrum. At this point only the Koreans with money from Qualcomm and Microsoft have committed to a rollout of HDR. Keep an eye on the other carriers, VOD particularly. The infrastructure manufacturers are a biased source IMHO.
