Rhode Island Indians pick new casino partner
NEW YORK, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Rhode Island's Narragansett Indian tribe has chosen a new partner, Boyd Gaming Corp. (NYSE:BYD - news) Corp, to help it build a $250 million casino in West Warwick, the Providence Journal reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said Boyd owns or manages 12 casinos in five states and has annual revenues of more than $1 billion.

The tribe last year unveiled plans to build a $250 million, 250-000-square-foot casino on 60 acres of industrial land.

But the Journal said the project faltered last autumn when there were concerns about its previous partner, Capital Gaming. So far, Boyd has only agreed in principle to buy out the tribe's contract with Capital.

In order for the Narragansetts to build the casino the state must approve two measures. One would put the casino on a statewide ballot in November and a second would set up a state gaming commission to oversee the venture.

But the paper said Gov. Lincoln Almond remained opposed to the casino, and has promised to veto any casino legislation.
