I had the impression that the bandwidth of certain media was limited by how susceptible it was to interference; i.e. the outer conductor of coax cable acts as a shield, therefore coax rejects noise better than telephone wire with side-by-side conductors, therefore you can get better bandwidth with HFC than with DSL. Is that an oversimplification? As I said, I'm trying to get a better grasp of the physics, and I'm not an EE!

BTW, I usually follow the ATHM thread and not this one, so I may have missed some discussion on this.
