metro-fiber? ...Optical fiber in metropolitan areas ?
Yes, one puzzle that is only recently being solved is splitting off individual signals from an optical network. It used to be that the light has to be converted to electricity and then sent through traditional switches and routers. A new approach is to used tiny partially silvered mirrors to bounce some of the light into a new fiber, the light that is split off can be chosen by frequency (color). That will make the full fiber solutions much cheaper because they will need less electronic interfaces, each of which add a bit of delay to the signal.
