As far as the maximum data rate for MCOM, the current technology can achieve a theoretical max data rate of approximately 800 kbps from what I've read, and the R2 service will have a nominal data rate of 128 kbps,

Isn't there a bottleneck as the data moves through the serial port? Does one have to install an enhanced serial port in the end user computer to take advantage of 128kbps?

I have experienced downloading data collectors through serial ports. They can go quickly at first but rarely can sustain high data rate transfers. Would the same be true with the MCOM modem?

IMO the serial port interface is an advantage as it has universal capability. I am just wondering about the speed issue. One could install a new high speed serial port but is it necessary? Does the MCOM modem compress data as it passes through the serial port?

I'll be the first on the block to get one of these things...hope they can get them on the market on schedule...June 30th...I guess I should pick up a couple of shares too.128kbs is fast enough for me for at least the next three years. If it is reliable and will install easily on any computer via serial port...and for $29? per month... this service will be a winner.
