Unless I'm missing something obvious, Intel should be shipping a VLIW computer (er, relatively) soon, thought the gestation period was pretty long and difficult. It used to be called Merced. IA64, Itanium and all that, though Intel somewhat downplays the VLIW term due to the stigma from the (old) failed startup Multiflow that pioneered the concept.

There's some pretty good technical info on the transmeta web site, see transmeta.com and especially transmeta.com . Sort of a wimpy vliw, actually, just one arith. op and one floating point op encoded per word, along with 1 load/store and a branch. But maybe that's the right approach, it really looks pretty microcodish.
