Yes, we have many Indian names of citys and lakes and so forth. Oklahoma itself is an Indian name but I forget its meaning.
Wilma Mankiller has been very ill the last year or so and I doubt that she has many official duties left. I grew up with Kirk Kickingbird who was "Little Red", the mascot of the OU Sooners football team during when we won several national championships. He went on to become a lawyer for the AIM movement in Washington, D.C.

We are so rich in history here that I am ashamed that I have not been more informed about all of it.

You mention all of the trouble between the Whites and the Indians. I just wanted to comment that the Indian people here are never in the news for criminal activities. They are a quite and probably better civilized than whites and blacks when it comes to behavior.
Many are alcoholics since it has been only a short time that we introduced it into their lives and they have not had time to genetically develope any resistance to the alcohol. They have treatment facilities now but alcohol has been the primary culprit in killing off the Indian and destroying his self worth.
Thanks for filling me in on the name of that massacre at Sandy Creek. I knew it had the word "Creek" in it. ~:>)
