J,

Here's a key to what Brocade is up to with Optical Networks. JDSU has a stake in MRVC:

biz.yahoo.com

>>The optical passive multimode extender, based on the new innovative passive optical component, supports Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel protocols. The extender is not only ideal for Internet and service providers to span their internal backbone networks inside campus and large enterprise environments, but it also enables the connectivity of servers and storage area networks over multimode fiber up to 6km and beyond.<<

There are going to be SANs on Metro DWDM rings (I saw one on a slide). SSPs (Storage Service Providers) caching the Global Internet locally is not beyond reach. EMC is also moving toward this market with a NAS that will be fronted by mucho memory. I guess NUMA may come in handy for them yet.
