Interesting sketch on the history of science.

When Isaac Newton published the Principia in 1683, a Scientist in Germany named Leibnitz immediately attacked him...

The famous arguments between Newton and Leibnitz over the formulation and principles of gravity led to the development of calculus, and was an early day version of the importance of user friendliness in technology. Newton was first to develop the priniciple of differentials to calculate tangents to curves, using esoteric language and notation, but it was Leibnitz who gave us a practical way of doing the calculations with his still familiar d/dx operator notation.
