I don't have any inside knowledge, but just looking at the public data.
A hint of an answer may be that Fugitsu had a flurry of news releases a year ago announcing lab densities around 20GB/inch but as far as I know they do not have any product at 10GB per platter or anything close to that (at least in the retail shops). And I have not seen 10GB from SEG, either. So maybe the fact that WDC, MXTR and HDD have volume production at those densities does give them an advantage. Their heads come from RDRT, I believe.
