OT Have had some extensive discussions on this very topic. Why is so much medical care in America so mediocre? Is it partly because medicine has become a business in a capitalist society? How many ethical decisions can a doctor make when he's earning 40K a day to perform surgeries? Will he look at the patient as an eye or a jawbone which he can cut and make $ out of...or as a whole person, whose health problems he might treat over decades? That kind of doctor seems to be disappearing. And that's probably the kind of doctor that most of us would want.

Not directing this at anybody persay--and I do believe we need these specialists. What medicine and technology can do is miraculous. Nonetheless, from time I've spent in Australia I have to say their health care system and their doctors are MUCH better overall. And of course, even their top doctors make a lot less $ than ours.
