Agreed we will all have our own perceptions of anecdotal factors. Something I find peculiar is that three of my coworkers are just recently enthusiastically getting into the market, talking about buying QCOM, AOL, YHOO, CSCO, etc. Two of the three had for the past several years not participated in the market at all, having said they thought the market would "crash" big time. The other had sold out at the bottom in Sept '98. A friend who has been bearish on the market for the past five years is now making special trips to visit a relative in another city to learn the "science" of daytrading. If this kind of activity is representative of what's going on out there, it does not surprise me that this could be a top. I sense that there is a feeling that because others have made a lot of money, now they want their share of it--and it should be easy because large % returns can be expected to continue indefinitely.
