Warren Buffett on risk and the marginal utility of more money... "You only have to get rich once. Why do very bright people risk losing something that's very important to them to gain something that's totally unimportant" Somehow I suspect that Mr. Buffett's idea of "rich" is of another order of magnitude beyond what we are talking about, but the principal may be the same.
Furthermore, in addition to reducing risk, cash carries the dual benefits of not forcing stock sales at a bad time, and allowing purchase of shares when most others are selling in panic and prices are low.
