I began selling covered calls as far out of the money as I could that would still offer a "decent" return of premium shortly before options expiration. This offered some nice additional monthly income. However, after review of the numbers, I have found that if I would have made more money holding my positions and not selling covered calls. a classic case of being penny wise and pound foolish. On the other hand, sharp sudden increases in valuation in my positions, even if they became into the money by options expiration date and were taken out, can still be accepted as a consolation prize. It's a hell of a lot better then having a losing position.
