"Traditionally, the semiconductor
sector usually goes through a two to three year cycle, characterized by
a period of high demand and limited supply, to a period of supply
overshadowing demand, I think this time around the cycle will be
extended," says Jesse. "The reason being, semiconductors as an area, are
no longer as dependent on PC sales as they used to be. Now, the
leadership position is shifting towards the communications market, with
the drivers being mobile phones, which should shortly be followed by
Internet devices, cable modems and xDSL technologies. Even traditional
industries like, automobiles and soon to be household appliances will
contribute to the demand equation. Given this backdrop, Soto thinks
there is still a lot more profitability to be made by investing in
semiconductor companies."
