I wouldn't get too excited about this announcement. LQID agrees to offer support for Microsoft's WMA format? Sounds like a good deal for MSFT, not LQID. What does LQID get out of the deal?

>> Under the deal, Liquid Audio software will include support for Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format that is used to encode digital music so it takes up less space on a hard drive and can be sent quickly over the Internet. <<

Who cares, WMA sucks compared to Liquid Audio. If this was really a bullish announcement for LQID it would be a deal where MSFT would embrace Liquid Audio, not Liquid Audio embracing MSFT's technology. How about a deal where MSFT's media player can play Liquid Audio files. That would impress me a lot more.

WMA is not going to replace the MP3. Liquid Audio could replace MP3 if it wasn't proprietary, because it uses a clearly superior codec.
