Intel Shares Rise on Analyst Forecast for Higher Chip Demand

Santa Clara, California, Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. shares rose as much as 7.1 percent after an analyst said reduced corporate concerns about Year 2000 issues and new Microsoft Corp. software will boost sales at the No. 1 computer-chip maker.

Intel rose 6 3/16 to 104 1/8 in early trading of 9.1 million shares. Earlier, the shares touched 104 7/8. The stock has gained 26 percent this year.

Robertson Stephens & Co. analyst Dan Niles said in a report that companies will buy more personal computers now that Year 2000 concerns have eased. The introduction next month of Microsoft's Windows 2000 computer operating system will further boost PC sales, Niles wrote. Intel makes chips used in most of the world's PCs.

``January is off to the best start seen in the last several years,' Niles wrote. He rates shares of Santa Clara, California- based Intel a ``buy.'
