I think what Netscape is after is to contrive the first web-based operating
system - not a PC based system. The attempt appears to be to add enough
capability in the browser and applets so that the user may perform all
his work activities within the browser. Data bases can easily be set up in
web site servers now. Features to be added include more powerful word
processing capabilities, drawing, page layout, overall web-wide document
generation and coordination, etc. Once the net access applications reach
these capabilities, PCs may not even need operating systems or large
mass storage. Net access machines that use a web-based operating system
would probably cost no more than $500. The cable TV companies would like
to see this sort of machine.
