Completely OT: Tim, I've got a personal story along the same vein. In the early 1970's I went to a poor part of Kentucky with a church group to do work for a local community. We were pouring a cement foundation for a building and attracted a few onlookers, local young men who watched us all day. At the end of the day, our group leader was approached by one of the men, who offered $25 for my girlfiend's hand in marriage. Out group leader politely declined. Later that evening, the man came back with his shotgun and a $50 offer. She and I hid in the basement for a few hours while it was explained to the local guys that brides weren't "claimed" that way up North. True story.
