Hi Frank:
This subject that you have so thoughtfully organized and presented
should give all of us, both management and employees an
opportunity to discuss our problems, experiences and possible solutions. We hear frequently from management that "we should be glad
that we have jobs". Yes we do need to feed, cloth and house our
families. So does management and they should be glad they have jobs!
Without the support of the employees - management will be replaced.
Therefore we have got to operate as one team and not separate teams
within an organization. Every time management changes we the employee
are "unknown" to the new management. After some 20 years of
loyalty this "unknown" status is hard to take and we have to prove
ourselves all over again.

Management has lost visibility because of the pressures to operate
more profitably. They are stressed and become "blind". They hardly
know who we are, what we do and why we do it. Decisions are made
blindly by not having all of the facts needed to make the necessary
decisions. We have people in management that shouldn't be there - the
sad part of it is that everyone knows it but nothing happens!

Employees must be recognized and treated like human beings. A friendly
hello and some recognition are necessary. I have been in management
and naturally work for management. But my people have always come
first and I always make time to "listen" to them - it is important
that we do this, no matter how busy we are!! IT IS IMPORTANT!!!!!

Remember, think positive even though the odds are against us and
believe that we are smarter then they are. Plan and prioritize what
we need to do to get the job done and "get out from under". Have
management participate when we are "saturated" and have them
determine what the priorities are. Avoid "verbal" feedback because
half the time they "don't hear what you are saying" because they
are to pre-occupied in a lot of cases - put your feedback to them
IN WRITING.

Remember, we have to plan for the future "to get out from under".
Launch a program with interests, goals and target dates. Plan alternatives and continously network. There are a lot of surprises
in life that can be rewarding.

Remember, management may appreciate you more than you will ever know
but they never show it. Sometimes they are limited in rewarding you
but they should be honest with us.

Well Frank, I have really gotten carried away here and it it rather
late. Thanks for starting this thread and I certainly hope "we"
get many contributions. I have so many unique experiences and
extreme business exposures that I will communicate again in the
future to share with all.

Good luck to you !

Alan
