InfiniBand Architecture (IBA) Overview: Memory Management

(This is Part 2 of an IB Overview Series which commenced with Part 1 - Architecture:
Message 12661548 )

InfiniBand Memory Management controls HCA (Host Channel Adapter) access to user and system memory
- Provides memory access using virtually contiguous ranges
- Allows both drivers and user-level applications to initiate and control access to memory

Enables Local memory protection
- Prevents applications from disturbing each other's data

Implements Remote memory access control
- Controls access from other hosts and devices to local memory

Memory Management Verb Categories:

Protection Domains (PDs) - provide a fundamental basis for access control
Memory Regions - enable and control HCA access to host memory for both local and remote operations
Memory Windows - enable enhanced control over remote access to host memory

+++ IB's memory management capability is sorta like NUMA and provides some of the critical functionality of NUMA, which is highly desirable when fronting servers and caching storage with banks of memory. This should be the end of GPFs and the Blue Screen of Death.
