TAME Establishes Common Interface for Web Browsers
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1999--VirtualSellers.com Inc. (OTCBB:VDOT) recently announced the launch of TAME© version 4.0, a software language used by Web developers to build Web sites and enterprise infrastructure.
Since TAME© is "browser independent," it provides a common interface that can bridge every major browser currently in use.
"This could put an end to the 'browser wars' brought about by conflicts between browsers and other software commonly used to develop Web sites," said Dennis Sinclair, Ph.D, chief executive officer of VirtualSellers.com.
TAME© enables applications to communicate with each other in a very unique way within the Web's infrastructure. Today, the majority of Web traffic consists of browsers connecting to servers and retrieving HTML pages for viewing. With TAME©, the Web can be much more than that. TAME© enables applications to communicate with other applications and IT provides a framework for connecting Web sites and applications to create dynamic TAME© enabled Web services.
TAME© enabled Web services link sites and applications together to perform functions that the individual components don't. For example, www.webshoppersclub.com, a site built with TAME©, provides data in 13 languages and uses 24 currencies. Rather than replicating the same site in multiple languages, TAME© allows the user to specify the parameters of the information desired such as language, currency, products, etc., and then retrieves the data and delivers it to the user. The result is an application that dynamically gathers, translates and displays on the fly, rather than accessing an existing page or converting existing content into fit the need.
TAME© provides an underlying mechanism for each of these services to expose its features and communicate with other services. With TAME©, you can link the services together as components and build an application very quickly. TAME© can access dissimilar databases from different operating systems and provide a common interface to display data drawn from many different databases. The key advantage is that TAME© is relatively simple to implement and is not tied to any operating system, programming language, or browser.
"Software developers find it difficult agree on matters relating to compatibility," said Sinclair. "They are intensely loyal to the technologies they use and don't like to compromise their efforts by adding support for opposing technology. Technical wars often lead to a lack of interoperability. Opposing software component developer's stay as far away from each other's technology as possible, creating a division that makes it difficult to achieve interoperability. The challenge has been to find a component technology standard that everyone could agree on and that utilizes minimal technologies."
The main goal of TAME© is to facilitate interoperability. Tag activated markup language (TAME) defines the use of XML and HTTP to access services, objects, and servers in a platform-independent manner. TAME© is a protocol that acts as the glue between heterogeneous software components. If developer can agree on HTTP and XML, TAME© offers a standard foR bridging competing or complementary technologies.
The industry has accepted HTTP and it is used everywhere, on nearly all platforms. XML is quickly becoming as ever-present as HTTP. Today you can find an XML processor for just about any common platform or language. This camaraderie makes HTTP a good choice for an interoperable transport mechanism.
Combining HTTP and XML into a single solution gives a whole new level of interoperability. For example, with TAME©, client applications written in Microsoft© Visual Basic© can easily invoke CORBA services running on UNIX boxes, JavaScript clients can easily invoke code running on the mainframe, and Macintosh clients can start invoking Perl objects running on Linux based servers such those sold by VA Linux (NASDAQ:LNUX). While some interoperability is achieved today through cross-platform bridges for specific technologies, once TAME© becomes the standard, other bridges will no longer be necessary.
