I always thought dogs howled at sirens because it hurt their ears but I just looked up dogs howling and it seems howling is a pack instinct. Then I got carried away and looked up cicada, crickets, frogs, and mockingbirds. And wouldn't you know... It's mostly the males who make the noise, and it's either about sex or macho territoriality! So I guess when Beethoven wrote to his Immortal Beloved, he was just following the dictates of nature. And when Pavarotti sings Nessun dorma (my name no one will know! No, no, only on your mouth I will reveal it) it just doesn't matter that he's a fat aging, divorced man with a penchant for waving a white handkerchief, he tears me apart.
