I always thought dogs howled at sirens because it hurt their ears but I just looked up dogs howling and it seems howling is a pack instinct.
Then I got carried away and looked up cicada, crickets, frogs, and mockingbirds.
And wouldn't you know...
It's mostly the males who make the noise, and it's either about sex or macho territoriality!
