Chronic Halitosis Could Be Due To H. Pylori Infection In Pediatric Patients

WESTPORT, Apr 24 (Reuters) - Physicians should consider Helicobacter pylori infection in their diagnosis of children with intractable halitosis, according to Dr. Philip Kazlow of the Babies and Children's Hospital in New York.

According to an article in the April 1 issue of Family Practice News, Dr. Kazlow told attendees at the annual meeting of the Eastern Society for Pediatric Research in Atlanta, Georgia, that H. pylori was detected in a series of eight children who presented with intractable halitosis. Two of the patients' parents were also found to have H. pylori infection as the cause of their halitosis.

Dr. Kazlow reported that, after treatment of H. pylori infection, with H2 blockers and triple antibiotic therapy, "...the halitosis disappeared..." in the eight children.

"All of the children had had extensive workups for their halitosis...[and] had also been practicing intensive oral hygiene," according to the report. Dr. Kazlow explained that although H. pylori is not "...the most common cause of halitosis," it should be considered when alternate diagnoses "...come up empty-handed."
