I used to be like you.

Used to be that at Christmas I would wait until two days before Christmas and get a $35 tree marked down to $10. Then I waited until Christmas Eve and got them for $3.00. Then I waited until the afternoon of Christmas Eve and got them for free. My goal, which I never achieved, was to be paid to carry one away. But this past Christmas, here we are three days before Christmas and every tree in town is sold out. So I have to drive 45 minutes through fog and cold rain and pay $35 for a small Frazier fur, and consider myself lucky, so that the family has something.

The only solution now is to convince the family to celebrate Epiphany, as they do in Italy, rather than Christmas. Then I can fill the yard up with free trees that all the neighbors have thrown out.

Oh--I did gather up all the doused luminary candles on the block after the neighborhood association's annual beautification effort was rained out. This will add romance to the kitchen table at night for an entire year, instead of lighting the sidewalk for two hours.

In any case, I am totally debt free and ready for hard times--I think. But the government will probably figure out a way to tax prudence. Private colleges already have.

I just hope that the coming economic catastrophe does not lead to foolish military policies. That's what usually happens. A war takes people's minds off the way the politicians have screwed up the economy.
