I don't think of the n word as just another curse word. It is a word that my friends who are black recoil from. I'm not sure what it conjures up in their minds, but it is physical and real. Hardly a "silly ghost." Therefore, I don't say it, regardless of context. Maybe if you socialized with black people once in a while you'd understand that.
