If a person was given to excitement, it seems to me that today was a day to get excited about VECO. The stock has been consolidating in the 38 to 49 range since early November. Today it made a decisive "breakout" - "picture perfect" from a chartist point of view. There was no waffling around - and VECO did it on one of the worst point loss days ever for the NASDAQ. VECO gained over 11 percent on volume approaching 7 times normal.

Today's close was the highest since 2/1/99 when it closed at 56.69. The peak close in 1999 was on 1/20/99 at 62.25. The highest closing price ever was on 9/12/97 at 72.50. That's only 31 percent away from today's close. Until the bottom fell out of the NASDAQ today in the late afternoon, the price was up to about 58.

IMO, if the stock was worth 72.50 in September 1997, it should be worth more today. The 1997 earnings per share actual was 1.32. The earnings actual for VECO for the last 12 months is 1.36. The 1999 earnings estimate is 1.44 per share - the actual results to be announced on 2/10/00. The 2000 earnings estimate is 2.01 per share. I am just guessing of course, but both the 1999 and 2000 estimates are probably low. We don't have long to wait to find out about 1999 - just slightly over 2 weeks.

Today may have been the first indication of a good earnings report to come!! Just so everyone knows - I do own VECO stock.
