As I have observed before, it was all laid out in "A Face in the Crowd": Republicans cannot win in a democracy, as long as the people vote their interests, so the plutocracy gets a shill to play on cornpone values that alienate the unsophisticated masses from their urbane benefactors. Many members of the media regard themselves as Patricia Neal, the public relations expert who plucked out the demagogic entertainer, and then, in her guilt, uses an unguarded moment to broadcast to the world what he is really like. Similarly, the many journalists feel manipulated by Republicans, because they mostly have to report straight, and therefore are anxious for any opportunity to "catch 'em". It is a sort of bastardization of Gramsci and the Frankfurt School, Marxist revisionists who sought to explain how the bourgeoisie had coopted the proletariat through mass culture.......
