SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- SCO (Nasdaq: SCOC - news) today introduced Tarantella Express, the second product announced in its new line of Tarantella web-enabling software. Tarantella Express, Designed for Smaller Computing Environments SCO designed Tarantella Express as a rich subset of the Tarantella Enterprise II software. Tarantella Express is a powerful, yet easier-to-install and administer web-enabling solution to meet the needs of smaller and less complex workgroup and departmental environments. With Tarantella Express environments of up to 45 concurrent users can access Windows and UNIX System applications residing on up to four application servers.

Tarantella Express includes new application and platform wizards to provide faster installation. The platform wizards give IT and resellers acting as ``virtual IT administrators' a simple-to-use method to take advantage of operating system specific features. The application wizards provide access to common applications such as Microsoft Office right out of the box, so that administrators can quickly and easily deploy and manage these productivity tools.

``Tarantella Express allows organizations to extend server-based computing to more desktop users,' said Laurie McCabe, Service Director at Summit Strategies, Inc. ``Workgroup and departmental environments that want to make the most of the e-commerce explosion will benefit from Tarantella Express and its superior Internet and web access for Windows and UNIX server solutions.'

``This new release of Tarantella is the ideal solution for the system administrator who wants to centrally manage and deploy Windows applications in heterogeneous computing environment,' said Keith McAuliffe, Compaq VP. ``Tarantella Express is a win-win proposition. It provides users with instant access to Windows and other applications, regardless of the client type.'

Tarantella Express and the SCO Channel

``SCO resellers can offer Tarantella Express as part of a more powerful and affordable server-based computing solution than solutions based on competing products,' said Peter Bondar, SCO vice president of Tarantella marketing. ``They can use Tarantella Express to enhance their existing UNIX System expertise, and quickly create full-featured web-enabling solutions for their departmental and workgroup customers. This provides them with controlled access to Windows and UNIX System applications in a very secure and cost effective manner.'

``I've been excited about Tarantella since SCO first introduced this innovative technology a few years ago,' said SCO Premier Reseller Ron Herman, president of Blue Chip Computer Systems. ``Tarantella Express helps me offer an affordable solution to quickly deploy and manage server-based applications for my customers. It is so easy to use that I basically just make sure that the browser works, and Tarantella Express does the rest!'

Pricing and Delivery

Tarantella Express pricing starts at $745 for 5 concurrent users accessing both Windows and UNIX System applications, additional users can be added for approximately $99 per user. Tarantella Express for the SCO OpenServer operating system will begin shipping during February, 2000, and for the UnixWare 7 operating system during April, 2000. Additional versions are planned for other popular server operating systems.

The Tarantella Product Line

Tarantella Express is the second product announced in the new SCO Tarantella line of web-enabling software. SCO also offers Tarantella Enterprise II for enterprises and other organizations who require additional scalability and features for deploying and managing server-based Windows, mainframe and UNIX applications. Later this quarter, SCO will announce another Tarantella product designed specifically for the Application Service Provider (ASP) market.
