Dean Smith has said that George Lynch provided the leadership that the '93 crystallized around and that nobody subsequently filled the void created by his graduation. As for the '84 team, I have often read the opinion that Dean determined the course of UNC's final game by effectively muzzling Jordan with his wholistic team oriented philosophy/system when he should have just let Michael loose during the closing minutes to take over the game in the same way as Michael basically did for every important Bulls post-season game throughout his career. Naturally, Dean doesn't understand this criticism and always attempts to refute it by noting that when Michael played for another great coach, Bobby Knight, on the 1984 Olympic team he scored only 13(?) points in the Olympic championship game. I, too, think this criticism is essentially baseless but wonder about it occasionally.
