Limit orders placed Good for Day Only are cancelled at the end of the day. Period. There is no 3 day rule on that. Sounds like you got shined by your broker.

If you received a notice that it expired unexecuted, that it was cancelled yesterday and they sold it on you today, then you have a cause of action. Since any transaction must have a transaction log time you can unwind that trade, whether or not you saved a screen print of the cancelled status.

The cautionary tale here is that it is useful to print out and keep a hard copy of your entire execution history as it unfolds. Not only is it good for taxes but it makes compelling evidence when a broker tries to pull a double talk stunt like that. You should report the guy.
