WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Jan 26, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- American
Power Conversion (APC) today announced two additions to its
MasterSwitch(TM) family of Web manageable network intelligent power
distribution units (PDU). The enhanced MasterSwitch and the new
MasterSwitch plus offer a number of new features including increased
security, multiple user accounts, and an easy-to-use Web interface
which are ideal for the growing number of co-locators, ISPs, server
farms and datacenter environments.

"APC's enhanced MasterSwitch PDU lineup eases the burden of managing
remote sites and maximizes the uptime of servers and internetworking
equipment by offering administrators the ability to completely control
power to individual equipment from a remote site," said Rob Johnson,
general manager at APC's Availability Enhancements Group. "With on-site
service calls to a remote site approaching $300 per visit, the
MasterSwitch units can pay for themselves almost immediately."

The MasterSwitch family of intelligent network PDUs offers users the
ability to control individual AC outlets remotely. This saves customers
managing remote sites the expense of having to send a technician to
manually reboot the equipment.

Both the newly enhanced MasterSwitch and MasterSwitch plus offer
additional features such as enhanced MD5 security; multiple user
accounts; a new Web interface; and high amperage solution support when
used with the MasterSwitch Remote Power Receptacles. MD5 is a more
powerful level of security that requires a "challenge-response" type of
authentication instead of passwords, which can be easier to breach.
Furthermore, multiple user accounts give administrators the ability to
define users and give them secure access to individual outlets. When
the remote user logs on, they only see the outlets to which they have
privileges.

The new APC MasterSwitch plus unit enables users to sequentially
power-up, gracefully power down, or reboot connected equipment through
easy-to-use Web, Telnet or terminal interfaces. The MasterSwitch plus
can also be programmed to perform graceful load shedding in case of an
extended power outage to increase uptime for critical loads when used
with an APC power protection solution such as Smart-UPS(R),
Matrix-UPS(R), Symmetra(R) Power Array(TM), Silcon(TM) DP300E, and
PowerChute(R) plus uninterruptible power supply (UPS) management
software.

The MasterSwitch plus has already received industry recognition
recently winning "Product of the Year" in both Communications Solutions
Magazine and Internet Telephony Magazine. The unit also received "Best
of Show" at Communications Solutions EXPO in December 1999.

The newly enhanced MasterSwitch and MasterSwitch plus units both offer
a compact 1U rack-mounted form factor for easy installation into APC's
NetShelter(R) enclosures. The enhanced MasterSwitch, which comes in
120V and 208V versions, is available immediately worldwide. The
MasterSwitch plus, which comes in a 120V version, is currently
available in North America. Estimated resale pricing is $699 and $999,
respectively.
