When Apple used HW dvd they used a Cube chip. It was on the daughter card that attached to the Graphics card (ATI). That was a stop gap measure until ATI could get the software done. Well, it looks as though ATI didn't quite get the SW right. My highly biased vote is: Apple should do the right thing and send out a $30 HW daughter card to upgrade the machines that are stuck with the problematic SW solution.
