Sun donated the Sun boxes to Pixar for free to do Toystory! That's the reason PIXR went with Sun for rendering. For all the animation and modeling, they used SGI, because no one can touch the capability. For the SGI boxes, they were happy to pay good money. Sure, Sun got some good PR from the deal with PIXR, but to say PIXR went with Sun because price/perf was better is obscuring the fact that they didn't pay anything for the computers at all. If they had to buy them for market price, it would be a different story altogether.
