2000 Q1 Earnings Conference Call 1/25/2000

Section 4: Question & Answer Session (47 min. 28 sec.)

Timemark: 19:30

Question: Is there any update on the idea of moving European 450 mhz to CDMA?

IJ: There's a lot of activity on that. The group of operators of 450 mhz studied, I think, for a roughly a year's time, three technologies -- selected both GSM at 450 and CDMA at 450 as [popular ??] ways of moving ahead. We think CDMA offers great advantages because of the fact there's limited bandwidth at 450 and CDMA is so much more bandwidth efficient; plus particularly 1x providing these very competitive data capabilities much more than available in competitive systems. And so there's a lot of operator interest. There will be, we believe, trials. I suspect there could be on the side of certain manufacturers, some heated competition trying to prevent this type of activity, but I think again, the economics, the capabilities of CDMA, certainly will give a good chance to move ahead in 450.

Question: You don't have anything in terms of specific product to point us to right now?

IJ: Right now, the next step will be trials at 450 to prove it out and then, hopefully, moving into commercial operation.
