"That may be beyond 2010. But first, the cost of other power train components associated with fuel cells must be reduced. For example, hydrogen fuel storage systems cost more than gasoline tanks. Electric motors cost more than the transmissions that accompany internal-combustion engines.

Once the oil and auto industries reach some kind of agreement on what fuel to use, a whole new fuel station infrastructure might be needed. As an interim solution, fuel cells can be powered by more readily available fuels, such as methanol, that produce air pollution."

Point of interest the oil and auto industries agreed on low sulfur gasoline/diesel last year, which is perfect for solid oxide fuel cell systems.

TESTING : Fuel cell system passes ...

Delphi Automotive Systems of Troy and Global Thermoelectric Inc., a Canadian fuel cell company, say they have successfully tested an integrated solid-oxide fuel cell system that runs on gasoline.

"The successful testing of this integrated system is a significant event in progress toward an economically viable fuel cell system that will use commonly available fuel for automotive applications," said Jean Botti, director of Delphi's Energy and Engine Management Systems' Customer Solution Center.

The system incorporates a new gasoline reformer designed and built by Delphi and solid oxide fuel cell stack components from Global of Calgary, Alberta.
