It makes very good sense.

And I realise that one cannot establish a risk-free position except it be profitless too.

..The straddle gives you the biggest amount of premium credit.

..Any action one takes in addition to selling the straddle must be intended to gain additional profit. If it loses money it detracts from the straddle. (That is why being long the stock might not be desirable).

..I think therefore I shall simply try to make-a-buck on the side playing either long or short and using Technical Analysis.... strictly short term trades. If I manage to make a buck it has enhanced the straddle.

It's an interesting subject.
